Cassper Nyovest and team steal light the show Global Citizen
Well, this will be a collaboration you can tell the grandchildren about one day. Cassper Nyovest, Chris Martin and special guest Stormzy performed Timbuktu live at the FNB Stadium, and damn-near tore the roof off.
Nyovest and Martin – the Coldplay frontman – have had a bit of bromance going off since the Global Citizen Festival was announced during the winter. However, it seems three is company, as UK rap artist Stormzy completed a holy trinity of talent on Sunday night.
The three linked up to give a live debut to their new single. The feel-good upbeat summer smash has all the makings of a classic. Nyovest nails the verses, Chris Martin steers the chorus home, and Stormzy brings the fire for his cameo role.
Timbuktu dropped at Global Citizen Festival
The performance got the FNB rocking. As the final act before Beyonce and Jay-Z take to the stage, the audience needed hyping. My word, did these guys deliver.
After Timbuktu got its debut, Nyovest was left on a one-man mission to rock the stage. All hell broke loose when Mufasa dropped, and it may have suddenly left a certain Mr and Mrs Carter wondering how they’d follow this.
Chris Martin initially opened the show alongside the Soweto Gospel Choir. Although he didn’t perform anything on a solo basis, his emergence for Nyovest’s set was enough to keep Coldplay fans happy.
Stormzy’s appearance was kept as a complete secret until Sunday morning, when the show schedule found its way to the public. The London-born rapper has developed something of a cult following in South Africa, and his decision to work with Nyovest is a major coup for the Mzansi music industry.
Anyway, we’re clearly over-stimulated here. You can watch the live version of this performance here and then listen to the full version on YouTube as well. Good luck getting this earworm out of your head…
